Other Local Pursuits
and Activities
Walking
Dalswinton itself offers many short walks, such as the 20 minute
amble around the Loch to view the Steamboat or excursions up and down
the River bank or longer walks up and over the hills to Pennyland
and
Shaws Farms.

There are also other lovely, quite uncrowded places to walk locally.
The most well known of these is probably the Southern Upland Way. (More
details may be found on their website: www.southernuplandway.com).
There is also a comprehensive list with the Tourist Board: www.dumfriesandgalloway.co.uk.
Golfing
A really untapped secret of the South West is its access to
Golf Courses. Troon, Tumberry and Prestwick are all just over an
hour away, but
the real gems are closer at hand. Southerness, the Crichton Golf
Club in Dumfries and Thornhill are to name but a few. They all
provide a decent challenge, are in wonderful locations and are great
fun
to play. More information is available on www.dumfriesandgalloway.co.uk.
Mountain
Biking
Dumfries & Galloway
is home to five of the 7 Stanes world-class mountain biking centres.
What could be more appropriate when the
bicycle was, infact, invented by Kirkpatrick McMillan near Thomhill
in 1840?!
Dalbeattie and Mabie Forest are already well recognised in the biking
world and work is underway in at least three other centres locally.
Consult www.dumfriesandgalloway.co.uk for
more information.
Sled Dog
Racing - Dog Sport Scotland
This is a new and innovative project
set up to promote the new and exciting sport of sled dog racing.
There are two trails locally,
one in the Forest of Ae and the other in the Forest of Kirroughtree
set up for training and racing. Infact, we have living at Dalswinton,
one of the best racing teams in Europe and which we hope is
going to go on to the next Winter Olympics. For further information
